The Elegance of the hedgehog - Muriel Barbery

(audio) You are supposed to sympathize with the main characters, you are supposed to like them, but you can't. I couldn't.

The way that both the concierge and the little rich girl go out of their way to make the rest of people they are stupid, and then feel victimized when people follow their lead and treat them as stupid took me beyond the point o disliking the characters, and almost to the point of starting to dislike the author.

I get it, part of the book is to show why do the characters behave like this, but I think the justification comes too late, by then I've spent the whole book rolling my eyes. It actually prevented me from enjoying the bits of philosophy that she manages to embed in the book, it is rather rare when an author manages to philosophy from a review or almost academic perspective in a novel.

Praised left, right and center, perhaps because of the traditional suburban parisian context, I personally recommend to skip it.
